A Brief History of
North Oak Ridge Baptist Church
1904-2025
-
NORBC originated from the burden of several people in this community who desired to have a church in the Oak Ridge Community.
-
The first records show that a congregation was formed on July 9, 1904 at Browns Schoolhouse (located just a short distance from our current location.) The church was named Oak Ridge Baptist because of the large number of oak trees that surrounded the area. The exact date for the church specifying “North” is unknown, but records do indicate that it was sometime before 1939.
-
From 1904 to 1911, the church met in the schoolhouse. In August of 1911, a small building was constructed. The building was used for 28 years, until it became too small for the membership. Our current sanctuary and original classrooms were built in 1939.
-
In 1965, the church reached its peak in attendance and expanded by adding rooms to the back and the side of the church building. It was also in 1965 that the church bricked the new addition and current sanctuary.
-
In 1972, the church parsonage was built and the fellowship building was built in the early 1980’s.
-
In 1998, a foyer was added to the front of the church.
-
In 2009, additional land was given to the church and in 2011, a new parking lot with an additional 39 parking spaces was added on this land. Also in 2011, a new brick cemetery wall was built to replace the original block wall and a fenced in playground was installed.
-
In the fall of 2016, the fellowship building expansion project was started and completed in the spring of 2017. The dedication service was held on April 30, 2017. The building was paid off in March of 2023.
-
In 2019 the sanctuary renovation project was completed, and 2023 the pews were reupholstered.
-
NORBC has had 20 men that have served as pastor of this local church.
